FOUND: The doors, front and back, were left wide open in this little shotgun cabin. There was no one around so I stepped in and back in time. Well preserved pretty much as it might have been, this is the cabin of Porter Rockwell. Porter Rockwell. Now, that name may not ring too many bells nowadays, but he was as well known as Wyatt Earp was at that time. Much of what is known is from secondary sources and that is mixed into the legend with what is known from primary sources. Porter Rockwell probably couldn't read or write (though he started out back East) and so he didn't keep a diary or journal. My Mormon friends will probably correct me or add to what I have to say, but here is the gist of his story as I've picked it up. He met up very early on with Joseph Smith and the Mormons. He became Joseph Smith's body guard and swore Joseph Smith's enemies to be his enemies. Later, the Mormons relocated to Missouri where there was trouble between Mormons and Non-Mormons. In time the Governor of Missouri even approved of Mormons being shot on sight. Porter Rockwell shot the Governor and met back with Joseph Smith who foretold "Cut not thy hair and no bullet or blade can harm thee." And he didn't and he wasn't. Porter Rockwell in time came to look a lot like modern-day Bill Golden of the Oak Ridge Boys with the long hair and long beard. Smith referred to him as the Destroying Angel. He was a member of the Quorum of the Fifty (top) and eventually killed somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 to 100 enemies of Smith or Brigham Young or the Mormons. He was a guide, mountain-man, an early Danite -- one of the self appointed vigilante groups dealing with Mormon enemies. He was a family man, loved, respected by those who knew him but very dangerous to those who had no love for Mormons. He was appointed Sherriff for life in Salt Lake City. He ran a brewery, drank whiskey, had a hotel, ran a pony express station. He is probably attributed with deaths that he didn't do, but killings were well known and in time he was an embarassment to Brigham Young and Mormon PR. He was sent south for a while. This cabin would be from that time, I presume. At one point he was brought to trial but was acquitted for lack of evidence. Another time late in life, he was difficult with lawyers who questioned him to gather evidence for the case as all he would say was, "Wheat!" and "Wheat!" to each. He died before that trial of old age. There was a made for TV movie starring Tom Berenger as Porter Rockwell, you may have seen. It was called "Avenging Angel." Early in the history of the church there was a "tradition" of "blood spilling" for atonement that has been attributed to this avenging angel reference.
